Bar Buddies

Rats

These are the rat sculptures that are on the Lexington Ave. side of Grand Central Terminal. I believe it's a reference to the tie-lines from sailing ships when they are docked. I think they had cone shaped pieces on the ropes to keep rats from crawling up and onto the boat.

Pocket Surprises

Not really drawings but they are pieces of paper with pen on them and I think they're pretty cool and well, it's my blog so I'll do as I please. They've been in the back pocket of my jeans for quite some time now and they've been through a rinse/wash at least once so they've really started coming apart. The above scan is how they looked when I pulled them out of my pocket.

This is after I opened up and flattened the papers. One is a envelope from a letter that my Dad sent to me. The other is a scrap of paper with a draft of a letter I wrote awhile back. The triangle closure section of the envelope actually became dislodged through gradual wear. Very strange

Here is the other side of the papers. The backside of the envelop was a shopping list for ingredients from last Thanksgiving. On both papers you can see how the ink bled through to the folded over side when the pants were washed.

Andrew At Buttermilk

A sketch of Andrew I made last night while visiting Steve last night at Buttermilk. The bag contained a tasty a carryout torta that came from Tacos Nuevo Mexico. I was using a Pilot BRAVO! pen that was nearly out of ink. I had to keep wetting it on my tongue to continue the drawing. Actually that gave some of the lines a nice faded look.

I started drawing the word "GOVERNMENT" from a sign on the wall and I'm just realizing that I've sketched it before while hanging out at Buttermilk. I do like those letter-forms!

My Throat Opens 4 Wine

After figure drawing I had dinner with Andrew, Stephanie and a few of their co-workers. This is a napkin drawing of a t-shirt concept. The idea stems from the phrase "My Throat Opens 4 Wine". It's a extra long shirt with a printed Sexy Body w/ bikini featuring the aforementioned phrase illustrated as a stomach tattoo in gothic letters on the printed body.

As you can see, the artwork has been approved. All we need now is financial backing for this project so please leave a comment if you are interested becoming a part of this unique business opportunity.

Figure Drawing - 2 weeks in a row

I made it to figure drawing for the second week running. I had a good start with the short poses but after the first longer pose I wasn't really feeling that great. I was drawing with graphite up until that point so I decided to switch to pen and work on some semi-blind contour drawings. This was the first attempt and it worked in that it got me drawing again without worrying too much about what the actual drawing was looking like.

Fall Bags

Over the past week I've been receiving samples for the Fall '09 bags and I've been making my construction revisions using pen and paper sketches. In the past I've traditionally used the computer to make all my drawings and for the past few seasons I've gone back to classic drawing tools. After the jump you can see a few more revisions drawings. I find the actually take less time when drawn by hand.

These drawings make up the fun part of my job (and the part I have the least time to work on because of our insane development calendar). So now you know what I do with my days!

Upside-Down Birds

Last night I had a somewhat crazy dream. I don't usually remember my dreams but this particular one stuck with me and actually woke me up in middle of the night. It was vivid enough for me too feel the need to record it in some way, so I grabbed my notebook and jotted down some words and a quick doodle of my dream, you can see it in red ink on the above scan. I made the drawing without the lights on so I'm actually pretty amazed how legible the text came out. It reads:

"Upsidedown Purple Birds like womens Apt"

In my dream, a few birds were flying around and sort of attacking me. They were purple and there heads were permanently rotated 180 degrees so they were looking upside-down. I'm not sure why I was dreaming about birds but I think I know where the purple comes from. On Sunday evening Leah and I were walking down Degraw and I happened to look into the windows of a garden level apartment. This apartment was immaculately decorated in a white and pastel purple color palette, very scary. So scary that we decided to turn around an have another look but as we passed by the second time, an elderly women came out of the garden level door. I sort of freaked out because I thought she might have seen me looking in on our first passing by. At any rate, I had purple on my brains and it must have made it into my dreams.

The drawing in black ink is a more cleaned up version of what I remember the dreamy birds to have looked like.

Robin du Bois

I ate dinner at Robin du Bois tonight with Gabe, Edith, Travis and Sarah, which is the classic crowd for some good French comfort food. We enjoyed the usual "Sherwood Platter" to start and then I had a duck salad. I made this drawing after we finished eating. We were seated at a long table looking towards the door and I happened to be at the head of the table so I had a nice view for sketching. I wish there were more people in the sketch but everyone was moving around too much and I'm a bit rusty w/ the fast sketches. I only caught the woman in the bottom right corner as she was sipping her coffee.

Tomorrow I'm in Philadelphia volunteering for the Obama campaign so look for a sketch from the City of Brotherly Love.

The Ride Home

They are also doing a lot of construction on the F line between the Jay Street stop and Bergen so there were a ton of MTA track workers mulling about. The little dude in the lower left corner of the page was a worker that was walking down the platform at East Broadway as I was waiting for the train.

Fall Figure Drawing

I made it to the SVA figure drawing studio today after work for the first time since the new school year. It had been so long since the last time I went that I was really a bit worried and hesitant that I wouldn't be able to draw. The start was a bit rocky but after a few sketches I fell back into a bit of a rhythm and churned out some decent sketches. There are more after the jump but the one above was one of my favorite long poses.

Overall it was so much fun to be back at figure drawing. All of the crazy regulars were there which is always strangely comforting. After such a fun time drawing I was basically giddy for the rest of the night.

Resurrection

I'm going to give this thing a go again. This is just a quick drawing of a Vespa scooter that was parked outside the Colette Store in Paris. A guy and a girl came out of the store and started to get ready to ride the scooter so I had to hurry up and make the drawing. I was happy with the drawing but would have liked to spend a bit more time on the sketch.

Let's see if I can make this happen.

V. Dollar Building

Here's another drawing from my trip to Put In Bay last week. It's a building near downtown that's certainly over 100 years old and housed the original Put In Bay post office and countless other businesses over the years. Javan said that when he was a kid it was a hardware store, but now it features a bar called "The Fishbowl" in one half of the ground floor and in the other half there is a restaurant called "Mossback's". The "V. Dollar" above the front door is the name of the dude who built it. I forget his first name but he was the first Mayor of Put In Bay.

That's all the history I have.

When I was working on this drawing a guy came up and started chatting with me. It caught me off guard as people in New York don't really pay too much attention so I decided that I need to be more prepared to talk to folks when I'm drawing.

Self Portrait in the Window

This is just a semi-blind contour drawing that I made of myself. I drew from the reflection in a window after it was dark outside. The window had a double layer of glass which caused a double reflection making it difficult to see detail.

I like how my head is sorta stretched out vertically, like a bobble head doll.

111 Mercer

Today was my first summer Friday here in the city (last week I flew to Indiana on Friday) so I took advantage of the wonderful weather and biked down to SoHo to check out a few shops and maybe spend some time drawing.

I ended up making a drawing of 111 Mercer Street which is between Prince and Spring streets just south of the A.P.C. store. The building is one of the few ground floor spaces that does not house some kind of retail or business, but they were looking for a tenant (see the sign in my drawing).

Remeber to LOOK!

So I started drawing the dude reading the newspaper but I was feeling uncomfortable because he was sort of looking in my direction. Oh, I was riding the subway home from watching the Detroit Pistons loose game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals at a bar in the Lower East Side (they lost the series). Anyway, I couldn't look at him comfortably so the drawing wasn't going so well. At East Broadway or the York stop a woman sat down with her back to me and she was wearing a strappy tank top and the straps must have been broken because there was a hair clip holding them in place. Anyway, I started drawing the clip and expanded from there and because she was facing away I didn't feel weird making the drawing and as a result I was actually LOOKING so it turned out OK.

Lesson learned.

A hazy morning subway sketch. I was pretty sleepy and I think I had the word "MUNCH" in my head and I started drawing these blocky letters that sorta looked like teeth. I guess I became engrossed in the idea of the letters becoming teeth that I didn't realize that I had written "MUCH" instead of "MUNCH".

Still Dreamin'

Oh man, last night I had a terrifying dream, so I tried to draw it on to subway today while I was going to work. In the dream a cat was scratching my face and one of it's claws became lodged in my cheek. For some reason neither the cat nor I could remove the claw from my cheek and though it was really frightening I couldn't feel anything that I would call pain. The only sensation was a firm pressure on my cheek. The dream was scary enough to wake me up and I found myself laying face down, off of my pillow, with may cheek resting firmly on the mattress.

Tonight I watched Top Chef at Sarah's house. I think I was rooting for Hung this episode but I'm not totally positive he's my favorite, I was just so bothered by Brian's hat that I didn't know what to do with myself.

It's been narrowed down to the final four so in honor I made a quick sketch of the remaining Top Chef: Miami contestants. Casey had a really horrible picture on the Bravo! bio page so I went with a side shot from Google image and the drawing looks really crappy. I would probably be kicked off of Top Illustrator: Brooklyn for this drawing but who would be the judge, Chris Ware?

Put In Bay

Ok, a few more pages from my family vacation. This page was made while I was flying to Michigan from NYC.

A page made during the drive from Ann Arbor to South Bass Island. (don't worry, I wasn't driving). Yes, that does say "The Three That Set Us Free - God, Guts, Guns" and yes it was in the back window of a pickup truck somewhere just east of Toledo.

Here is an attempt at a watercolor of a sunset. The brush was super small and I had trouble getting enough water down on the page. Also, I don't know what I'm doing. Maybe one of those watercolor waterbrushes would help

Columbia Cruiser

This is a bike that I rode around South Bass Island while I was on vacation with my family last month. It was an old Columbia bicycle that was used as a rental bike on the island. I believe Javan said that his father bought the bike from one of the rental places though I cant recall when. Anyway, it was a great old cruiser with a coaster brake, and a chain guard.

It had a great plate crown fork as well and was in quite good shape considering it was well over thirty years old. Javan seemed to think the tires were the same as when his dad bought the bike which seems crazy but I must admit they did appear to be super old. No matter what it was a joy to ride ride around the island.

Oh wow, I didn't notice this as I was posting about 209 Elizabeth Street but this is the one year anniversary of my drawing blog! My first post was on September 16, 2006 and over the past year I've made 133 posts which means there should be at least as many drawings but probably a few more. I had originally intended to post a drawing every day, and I was doing so for the first few months, but eventually I fell off the wagon and never made it back on.

Recently I've been trying to make very complete illustrations which I think has taken a bit of the fun out of drawing so I think for the rest of September I'm going to try to get back into making more drawings but spending less time on each one with the goal of getting closer to a drawing-a-day.

This was a very detailed drawing of LaGuardia airport on the way out of town for my family vacation at South Bass Island in Lake Erie.

209 Elizabeth Street

Wow, it's been over a month since my last post. Is anyone still out there? Drop a comment and let me know your still checking in every now and again.

The SVA figure drawing should be starting up again so I'm looking forward to that. This drawing is of a building in Manhattan located at 209 Elizabeth Street between Prince and Spring. I had intended on going back and spending a bit more time on this one but never got around to it, so here it is as a somewhat incomplete drawing. It's a very cool building and I was hoping to include some interesting history along with my post but the best I could find was this post about it another blog (check out the link to "more photos" for an exterior view of the building). From the old hand-painted sign I could tell it use to be a bakery but now it's some sort of gallery or antique shop.

Rhino

Awhile back I made a drawing of my desk at work and the drawing started with a small sketch of a stuffed rhino on a post-it™ pad. Well I had a slow moment today and I made another drawing of that same rhino, this time with graphite.

I like this one.

Ok, off to the airport. I'm flying home to Michigan to spend time with my family. We'll be heading out to vacation on Put In Bay island in Lake Erie off the coast of Ohio. I'm hoping to make a bunch of drawings so check back in a week or so to see a ton of new stuff (hopefully).

Boat

After working late and then having a flat tyre on the way home I finally made it to "Cousins Too" for a burger with Andrew and Travis. After dinner Travis and I went on for a drink at Boat and I started my daily drawings with the above napkin.

Then I was explaining something to Travis about design and how it relates to fashion/apparel (Boring!) and I drew a t-shirt and then filled it in with a dude. The page evolved to what you see here with the addition of some bike parts (front light & brake).

Steve had the latest copy of 100 Bullets which got us talking about comic books and drawing comics. We were talking about how to tell a story with visually dramatic images and how to accomplish this task. This page was my attempt to show something with more dramatic compositions.

Bicicletta

I was surfing around today before heading home from work and I came across an image on Face Hunter that caught my eye. It was the graphic print on the dress in this image that really looked nice to me. I quickly grabbed the image and started making my own version of it. I think it's a bit too similar to the original right now but I like the feel of it so far. I'll have to keep working on the idea and make it my own but I'm happy with the start.

The graphic reminds me of the custom paint job on this bike which I really like. I love the way the colors in the graphic are cropped out by the frame but you can read the progression of the lines even thought most of the line is implied. I may try applying my graphic to a bike frame and see how it goes.

Elvis Costello

I've know of Elvis Costello for many years now, his carrier has spand my entire life (1977 to Present), but aside from a few songs that are a part of my general conciousness, I've never really listened to his music. As a result I've recently decided to spend some time and learn a bit more about him and listen to some of his music. At this point I'm going to be working in chronological order and I just picked up "My Aim is True" last week my lunch break.

Aside from myself I don't really make too many detailed drawings of people's faces. I think I'm a bit too self concious about my drawing skills to actually sit down with someone I know and draw their face. Maybe when figure drawing starts up again in the fall I'll spend some time working on faces rather than the whole figure.

Inside A Bar

Just a sketch of the inside of a bar we visited tonight. It was too hot inside so we only stayed for a drink.

I believe the bar was on 4th street near 3rd Ave. We had a few drinks there the last time Jim and Jason were in town back in October. I made a sketch of the same doorway which can be found here. Though it's fairly incomplete I like tonight's drawing better, the more bold lines seem a bit more confident to me.

I really love the EXIT sign, it was the first thing I drew both times.

After my Building drawing, while Travis and I were getting a drink, I made "4th of July" theme drawing on a bar napkin. That lead to a whole series of "What We Love About Summer" drawings. Travis drew the lemonaid/hotdog drawing along with the baseball drawing. I drew the rest.

Quick Building

For some reason I was in a drawing mood on Tuesday, I'm not sure why, maybe the great weather. After the bike drawing I started drawing the buildings on Smith Street and while I was drawing I was telling Travis how I seem to have trouble getting my city street drawings to look right and how I end up becoming really frustrated and give up before I finish the drawing. Well maybe it was because I was warmed up or maybe it was the fact that I was talking and and not thinking too much about the drawing but it actually started to look pretty good. I actually wish I had kept going with the sketch but we decided to ge inside for a drink instead.

Bike

After finishing the Ice Cream Truck drawing, I headed back to Brooklyn to meet up with Travis and Gabe. It was so nice outside we ended up spending the better part of two hours sitting on a bench outside of The Boat. In addition to some people watching (they just keep on coming!) I made this sketch of a bicycle that was locked to a nearby parking meter.

Things didn't really end up lining up, but I still like how it turned out.

BBQ

This past sunday I attended a BBQ hosted by my friends Max and Andrew. It was a pretty amazing event, as blogged about by Max , complete with an awesome photo of me eating a giant catfish po'boy.

The image above was a quick drawing of max tending grill (way to go Max, looking so smooth). Good job team, can't wait for the next BBQ.

Backpacks

It looks like I'll be designing a backpack for the Summer '08 line so I was doing a few doodles of some backpack styles. I quickly scanned a few in and threw on some color just to get a bit more practice at the process.

It only took 10 minutes to drop in the color on both backpacks and now that I've created the layered photoshop file I can recolor them as may times as I like. I was planning on having a full page of color options to post but I'm off the check out Gabe and Lindsay in their Ritalin Readings show.

In 15 minutes I've colored up these options for both backpacks. Layering in the camouflage was super easy as well.

Here is a drawing of my desk at work. Yesterday quite a few people were laid off here at work so it's been a somewhat difficult week so far. Hopefully tomorrow will be an easy and smooth transition into the weekend.

I again drew this large, on 11x17 paper and I think I may add some color in the next day or two. The yellow box is a post-it note drawing of a stuffed rhino that started out the drawing.

Travis, Kate and I rode our bikes out to Coney Island today. We had hot dogs at Famous Nathan's and then went out to the beach to enjoy the cold sandy breeze coming off the ocean.

Ok, more practice adding color to drawings, this time in Photoshop using layers. I just pulled my recent drawings and started adding layers and filling in some solid colors. I think I'm going to keep working on this one and see where it goes.

I've been a big fan of Geoff McFetridge for awhile now and this project also makes me happy. I think I fall in love with his work because it's always such a simple execution
of a great concept. I read somewhere that he starts all of his work with a hand drawing, even the super clean illustrated stuff, which I
think is what give his work such life.

Another Figure Drawing Session

I made it to figure drawing again tonight. SVA was off last week for spring break and things have been pretty crazy at work so I haven't made it since
Valentine's Day. It was a bit rough at the start but I managed to get into the groove a bit towards the end and pull off a few drawings that I'm happy with.

I picked up a few different colors of Prismacolor pencils today so you can see the posted image is drawn in a somewhat maroon color. I would still like to try out watercolor for figure drawing as well as black and white Prismacolor on medium tone paper.

Valentine's Figure Drawing

Tonight I went to the SVA figure drawing for the second time. Showing here is my most successful drawing of the night, it was the first longer pose. After the jump I have a few more drawings from tonight's session.

I can't wait to doing more figure drawing.

This is a page of 2 minuet warm up poses that I like. I started out drawing with the Ebony Graphite pencil but switched to a black Prismacolor pencil for the longer 20 minuet poses and was really happy with the results.

This is another long pose that was working well. I need to work a bit faster so that I can try to get both models into the composition. One of the models was a dancer and she had a really small, compact, muscular body that was really interesting to draw.

I was able to build up the tones with the Prismacolor pencils really well, much better than with the graphite. I'm planing on picking up some more Prismacolor pencils in some other colors for the upcoming Wednesdays. I would also like to try out some drawing on middle tone paper with Prismacolor pencils. I think I have an old pad of paper from foundation drawing that should take with me next week.

It's Bed Time

I've been thinking about building a platform bed frame for quite some time now but the project has remained in the planning stages ever since college. I've always regretted not working on this project while in school when I had access to a full wood shop as well as the free time and free space back in Cincinnati. Every year or so I revisit the idea and try to flesh it out a bit more in the hopes that I will actually take the plunge. I put together a rough plan over the weekend for a bit of Home Depot reconnaissance work and this photo shows the paper along with my notes and ideas.

After the jump I have a more refined drawing with a plan view and side and end elevations.

It's mainly comprised of 2x4's held together with lag bolts. I'm not entirely sure that it will be stable enough as I've designed it but I guess there's only one way to find out. Unfortunately the frame hasn't been built yet and I don't have a date for Valentine's day so I guess the testing will have to wait.

I have added a center leg to support the center of the frame as I've seen them on some of the bed frames sold at DWR. I've also started an Excel spreadsheet in order to keep track of the parts needed and as a way to track the total cost of the project. I guess the tools that the merchants and pre-production people at my work use are good from something after all. Hopefully with all of this careful planning I will actually pull it together this time and complete the project.

Home Sick

I slept in today until nearly 2 pm which I think I needed because I'm finally feeling a bit better. I don't have a temperature but this is me being "classic" sick. I'm also wearing a tie and a cardigan which I can't really explain but just because you are sick doesn't mean you shouldn't look your best!

I should be up and functioning again tomorrow. Spending three days straight in my apartment is a bit maddening and now that my cough has subsided somewhat I think make it back into the world.
